How does gum disease get started?
Gum disease gets started when bacteria adheres to the gum tissue in the form of plaque or tartar. With time plaque hardens and it promotes bacterial infection of the gums at the point of attachment. Gums become red and start bleeding when you brush. They turn puffy as well. It is the start of first stage of gum disease called gingivitis.
Over time, tartar destroys gum tissue and form pockets around the teeth. You may risk loosing one or more teeth as the disease progresses.
